In 2017 a Nobel Prize acknowledged the field of circadian rhythms for its effect on wellness. The concept is easy to understand. The word “circadian” comes from the Latin “Circa” meaning “around” and “diem” meaning “day.”
Circadian rhythms are biological processes that happen over the course of the day. The rhythms are regulated by circadian or biological clocks. Each cell in our body contains one of these clocks and each clock turns on or off thousands of genes at different times.
The genes greatly influence our health. When we are healthy we get a good night's sleep. We wake up feeling refreshed with a lot of energy. We have a clear mind and we have wholesome hunger. We can exercise in the afternoon. In the evening we are tired enough to go to sleep without trying.
But if these rhythms are disrupted, our clocks cannot send messages in a timely manner to our genes. Our mind and body are negatively impacted. This can lead to all kinds of problems including insomnia, attention deficit, hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), depression, anxiety, migraine headaches, diabetes, heart disease, dementia and even cancer.
The good news is that it is easy to get our proper circadian rhythms back. Then we can even reverse health problems and get back to good health. We already given you some tips on how to do that.
